Elwood, James Joseph, 94, WWII Veteran serving in the Air Corp and retired Design Engineer for Boeing, passed away Oct. 10, 2016. James entered his military service on Dec. 5, 1942 in the Army Air Corp and received his wings from the Mission Field, TX. flight school. Just a year after entry on Dec. 5, 1943 he became a flight instructor there. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant in the 55th Fighter Group where he flew P-38 and P-51 planes. During his service to his country, he flew 22 missions and fought in battle tours...

Elwood, James Joseph, 94, WWII Veteran serving in the Air Corp and retired Design Engineer for Boeing, passed away Oct. 10, 2016. James entered his military service on Dec. 5, 1942 in the Army Air Corp and received his wings from the Mission Field, TX. flight school. Just a year after entry on Dec. 5, 1943 he became a flight instructor there. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant in the 55th Fighter Group where he flew P-38 and P-51 planes. During his service to his country, he flew 22 missions and fought in battle tours in Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Germany. He was in the European Theater of Operations until the end of WWII and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. In his spare time he was a true outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting pheasant and quail, seeding his birdfeeders, golfing, playing tennis, cooking out, homemade ice cream and even waterskied until he was 70. He also enjoyed a good puzzle, and playing games like checkers, cards, and sequence. He enjoyed the small things and took pleasure in not only spending time in the great outdoors or a good one on one challenge of golf or tennis, but more importantly, his true passion was in helping others. James truly cared for his family. He worked hard for them, provided generously for them, and loved them deeply. He extended this to his church family as well. He was a baptized Christian and was a longtime member of the North Side Church of Christ and served as a deacon. He also served on the advisory board at York College in York, NE. He volunteered for the church and helped repair elderly church member's homes. He was a wonderful and devoted man, he will be deeply missed. James is preceded in passing by his parents, Gifford and Minnie Elwood, and brothers, Grant, Leo, and Dick Elwood. He is survived by wife of 72 years, Velma Elwood; son, Dennis (Debby) Elwood; daughter, Diana (Mark) Grimes; grandchildren, Damon and Royce Grimes, Matthew Elwood, Denae Wright, and Cameron Atwell; and great-grandchildren, Paxton and Gracyn Grimes, Carson and Holden Wright, and Issabella Atwell. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Fri. Oct. 14, 2016 and funeral service at10:30 a.m. Sat. Oct. 15, 2016 both at Resthaven Mortuary.
